Harley’s skinny ass café and lounge hosted the inaugural Distonal shebang with a Cropped Out-curated banquet of delicacies. Distonal is the hot new baloney district sired by art-troll and absurdity excavator Kenny Bloggins, formerly of the enchanting and informative The Decibel Tolls. Louisville’s Tropical Trash and Natives sandwiched the formal mannerisms of Iowa’s Wet Hair and Ohio’s Pyschedelic Horseshit. Troppy Trash kicked out the pulpiest punk jams in town. Wet Hair shined up and scuzzed out the poppier accents of the Factory Records classics. Psychedelic Horseshit crowded around a tiny table of samplers, synths, and drum machines and gave their warped pop a deep hip hop reach around. I had to cut out before Natives on this particular school night, but they’re in tip top form currently. Be sure to check out their new video for the great song “Loose Secrets”. Harley’s has some other killer shows this coming week, including break dancing expos with Child Bite on Saturday and Dane Waters on Tuesday. In fact, just take a look at Other Side of Life for info on some of the best stuff going down in Louisville over the next few nights. And check out the Tropical Trash guys playing in the Ecstatic Girth Survival Sextet this Sunday, March 11 with Softcheque and New York’s Y/Y at the Z bar.

VEGASUS

Vegasus are a young “space/dance/noise” duo from the minds and souls and fingers of Nick Wilkerson and Anthony Esposito – inventive and prolific young sonic prophets of Louisville’s all-ages DIY scene. Nick also holds down the beats in The New Mexico. Anthony’s freshest endeavor goes by the name Sloux, and if Google is to be trusted, also plays bass with Ace Frehley and members of Dokken.

He’s also the oldest-looking high school student in the area. Vegasus wanted a stark, lifeless landscape to frame their transcendental damage, and hooked up some dunes and dust for our cameras. Their performance starts with about 1 minute of stark, ear-draining tremors, then hooks into a kind of bastardized space inversion of sacred organ hymns and barbed, meaty boogie-down beats. It was a pretty warm day, so props to the boys for dressing up in plastic jumpsuits and duct tape. The rest of us were wearing chiffon unitards.

Waters, Dunes, Riles, and Young

Amen Dunes dropped by the Z Bar on a stank Thursday evening last week to unpack their woozy tunes and spread the murk with Louisville’s Dane Waters and Zak Riles. Dane raised the curtain with some stark and lovely compositions, sounding a bit like Jarboe’s less feverish moments, or perhaps a Kendra Smith who was raised in the ocean. She would have fit in perfectly with the classic 4AD roster from the late 80′s/early 90′s. Be on the lookout for a video with Everybody’s Hugging featuring her sickest roller skate jams. Zak Riles played a a solid sampler menu of a set, rotating between nimble little riffs, drones, waves, and hidden melodies. Amen Dunes shrugged off a bunch of fuzzed-on budget symphonies to god, humble little slow-motion pop hymns, where the wall of sound was constructed with gauze, gravy, and burnt hair. It boasted some of the same good old find-the-candy-in-the-bowl-of-broken-glass trick that Suicide and early Butthole Surfers (minus the jokes and bad trips) used to employ. Perfectly unsteady pop delirium, and the type with wool mallets at that! Oh, and word on the streets is that Amen Dunes’ keyboardist has the 411 on some fresh K-Swiss deals at Oxmoor. Go spend some bucks in the towering aisles of the Sacred Bones online store.

Is everyone in Old Baby 7 feet tall? Great to see so many people out at a show on a Sunday night, especially gathered for a program of unsettled throbbing and anti-idyllic mountain poetry. Long serpentine twists and a blunt, oppressive rhythm section sounded perfectly unscrewed and despairing. Kinda like Smog’s Bill Callahan crooked crooning over a more rural Swans. Swogs? If you squint your ears, you can also smell some Lungfish and Led Zeppelin doodles, too. Totally weather-appropriate, by the way. I won’t be wanting Old Baby in my way when I’m going down on a popsicle in my Crocodile Mile this summer. But for now, it’s the perfect dis-comfort food. Delicious poisonous stew. We can’t wait for seconds.

Old Baby is playing their first placenta-drenched show on Sunday, Dec. 11 at Zanzabar. We don’t know much about them yet, but our favorite rustic giant and Everybody’s Hugging guinea pig, Jonathan Glen Wood, is going to be joined by folks from great bands like Young Widows, The Shipping News, Sapat, Dead Child, and more. Plans are in the works for a release on Hawthorne Street Records, the same people who offered up juicy morsels from locals Brain Banger, Breather Resist, Your Black Star, and Dead Child.

The Other Side of Life and the same pretties that brought us the sicko Cropped Out festival last month are throwing up this party. Chicago tricksters Cave will be wrecking it throughout the remainder of the evening with their colorful, childlike, inventive throbs and hypnotic rocking. Check out their video for “Adam Roberts” here. Yes!

Friday night, Louisville pop connoisseurs The Deloreans squeezed a million fans into the tiny Nach Bar for the annual Black Friday Blackout – ”16 taps of beers through which you cannot see light.” Good lord. I had a Creme Brulee Stout from Southern Tier that tasted like a cup of pancake syrup. The band members sloshed their way through the Pulp Fiction soundtrack dressed as Mia, The Wolf, Vincent, Jules, and a couple of other thugs and cruds that I couldn’t place. A fun idea well executed!

“It’s your future… I see a cab ride. Move out of the sticks, gentlemen.”

“I do believe Marsellus Wallace, my husband, your boss, told you to take ME out and do WHATEVER I WANTED. Now I wanna dance, I wanna win. I want that trophy, so dance good.”

On a side note, a Carcass – referencing vandal has stated his position in the bathroom. ”Regurgitation of Giblets” indeed!…

…and then I saw some more metal-themed graffiti this morning. Someone better get to the bottom of this.

Kentucky Prophet, Madame Machine, The Frequent Sea

Kentucky Prophet has played everywhere in Louisville, from Za’s Pizza Pub to Lebowski Fest. He’s been unceremoniously stripped of his hip hop crown in Memphis, banned from college Baptist centers, and presided over male stripper night in a seedy Tennessee booze shack. His “Beyond the Fringe” album is a shameful masterpiece of love and loathing. He’s backed off of the hip hop recently, returning to the skewed, absurdist, melodramatic piano pop of his early days. Further high points in the poetry of despair can be found at his wonderful blog. Of course, there are the more traditional means of stalking.

Also, his live prog-metal cover of Whitney Houston’s “I Wanna Dance with Somebody” with Technology Vs. Horse was one of the most moving expressions of cultural appreciation I’ve ever seen.

Anyway, he’s playing a sweet show at Harley’s Main Street Tavern in downtown Louisville tonight with locals Madame Machine and The Frequent Sea. Should be a good one!

Hello.

Welcome to the website. We want you to watch some videos, so we’ll make this nice and short.

We created this site to stash music videos and help people experience unique live performances. These are not traditional music videos, and they aren’t exactly ‘take-away’ shows, either. They are a complete collaboration between artist and filmmaker. Each video is recorded live, and in a single take. Then we spend an couple extra minutes shooting the environment.

We are going to keep shooting videos, but we’re also going to use the blog section of this site to talk about our favorite artists, share music news, and link up some of our favorite stuff from around the interwebs.

We hope you enjoy what we are up to. If you feel so inclined, please share with your people.
